Racing Preview | European Championships 2018

I'm excited to get this 2018 season underway! We're in Prague, the weather is good, and I'm feeling sharp! Heats for the European Championships kick off tomorrow with semi-finals and finals on Sunday.

We had a really high quality week of training out here earlier in the month where the majority of the familiarisation with this course was done. This was followed by a week of easy training mostly back in Lee Valley. I also managed to get up the road to see family, paddle on the home lap back in Stone, and pick up the Stoke-on-Trent Male Sports Personality of The Year award at a great night at Kings Hall in Stoke!

We flew back out here on Saturday and I immediately felt at home again on this river so I've kept my training volume low to stay fresh. My 'peak' has arrived a little later in the year than normal and I'm taking this as a good thing! In the past I've been performing really well in training in the build up to the Europeans but then I've never quite got it right on the day. Here's hoping that on this occasion this later taper will do the job!

I love the venue and I've had some successes here in the past racing in 3 finals with my best finish a 4th place. Painfully close that day but if I can get to the final this weekend I'm confident I can challenge for those top spots! Ultimately that's the aim. Do a good job through the rounds to get myself in that final and in contention for a medal.

Racing a final here is like no other! The competition always draws a big crowd and the Czech fans get behind everyone which is awesome. I have family flying out too who will join a decent British support crew cheering for us all as well. Expect very tight racing, I can't think of a single athlete who doesn't love racing here, it's that kind of course! Can't wait to get into it anyway, see you on the start line!
