This weekend I race for my ticket. My ticket to the 2019 international season. My ticket to race for the ONE available spot to represent Team GB at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. An extra exciting one this year!
Usual format, 3 races in 3 days (20th,21st,22nd) at Lee Valley White Water Centre, London. Best 2 results count with a points system deciding the overall results. The top 3 in each category at the end of racing will be the British team for 2019.
Selection for the Olympic Games will then be decided from a similar 3 race series…
ICF World Cup 1 Lee Valley (June)
ICF World Cup 5 Prague (September)
ICF World Championships (September) – [Bonus Points available]
I have never felt this prepared to race senior selection before. I have had my best winter training with the longest spell without injury, I am coming into form at the right time, and my new approach to racing has given me much more ‘bandwidth’ to my performance.
I actually really enjoy this time of year. My training volume is massively reduced so I feel fresh. I love not waking up sore every morning and the extra horsepower in the arms makes everything out on the water feel easier! Only training in the mornings too makes it feel a bit like I’m on holiday – ‘Staycation’. It’s not often I get to enjoy this much time off at home. This easier build up to racing often takes place in foreign countries and it can get a bit claustrophobic spending so much time in hotel rooms. I will make the most of my time with yoga, playing my guitar / piano and reading books. Super chill! I will arrive Saturday fresh, focussed, and ready to flow.
Aiming to have my space locked down by Sunday, but we know if I’m under pressure on the final day that I’ve been the before too, and I can come out on top! I won’t be on social media over the course of the weekend, but I will update on Monday hopefully with good news!
